Moonrise Over Headland

After a frustrating and unfruitful trip to Lynmouth (Devon)on a cold day in January, I was beginning to lose hope of completing a successful painting. As the sun started to go down I noticed a huge glowing moon appearing from the pinkening horizon. Painting at sunrise and sunset is always hit and miss as everything happens so quickly but I didn’t waste a moment and started painting. I knew I had very little time before the sun would go down completely, so I chose a small panel and painted as fast as I could, keeping the design minimal with very little foreground and concentrating on the elements of the painting that would change the fastest- the relationship between the sky and moon and the light grazing the top of the Exmoor headland. I didn’t know it at the time but I was lucky enough to capture the famous January Wolf Moon. I was very much in the right place at the right time
